Camps are a way to have fun and learn at the same time. This is a good job for someone with inborn leadership skills, a proactive and positive attitude and with a love for outdoor activities.

A day camp counselor is expected to instruct participants in a wide range of activities, such as sports, hiking, playing an instrument, doing simple art or just improving their social skills by making them interact with one another in a new environment, less formal than school. The applicants are not required to have a specific educational background, although most of them are at least bachelor graduates. Most employers require certifications in first air or life saving if the activities are near the water.

Even if you are not a former professional athlete, you are still required to have some knowledge about sports, the rules for the most common ones like soccer, baseball or basketball. Any special sport could be a plus, as children could learn new things in camp like archery, climbing and more. The most important part is an open mind and a positive attitude. Involving every kid, even the shyer ones is more important than athletic performance, therefore any activity should be centered on good mood and team spirit instead of winning. For every sport be sure to explain the safety rules first, especially if it involves protective gear like helmets and life jackets and never accept a participant who is not following these requirements.

Time management and organization

Your job is to help campers make the most out of their time spent there, so be ready to design an interesting agenda, work around lunch hours, rest moments and make sure you put something in there for everyone. Remember to save some time for yourself to take care of the administrative duties so that the camp does not run short on supplies.
