A referee is not required to have any formal education, but they are required to pass specific fitness and theoretical exams periodically to ensure they have both the knowledge about the rules and the ability to be as close as possible to the turmoil of the game. Rule Enforcement

Your job as a referee is to remind players to follow rules just by your simple presence on the field. When the situation calls, you have to spell out those rules to justify your decisions, without sounding unfair or taking anybody’s side. In order to be respected, you need to be always just and follow the book merciless, even this leads to some disapproving fans.  

Athletic Skills

A referee is expected to be as fit as the players usually, as they are required to be in the middle of the game, running, watching and quickly stopping the evolution if anything is out of place and any rule has been broken. Furthermore, referees are required to pass tough physical tests before the start of each season to check if they can still be involved in the game and on top of their abilities. Highlight in your resume any sport club memberships and how active you are on a daily basis to show interest in the sports in general, not only as a job.

Communication and Negotiation Skills

In this job, especially when you get to higher levels, you will interact with people from different countries who might not speak the same language as you or have very little comprehension of what you are saying. To avoid misunderstandings and get the ball rolling and the game going, you need to be able to communicate non-verbally and to make yourself clear by using sign language and a few common words or phrases for the respective game.

The most important skill is to remain calm, with a respectful attitude at all times and avoid to take personally any comments, either from fans or players. You have the role of the judge and you should always treat this with dignity.
