A pipe welder is a worker who has a great combination of skill, welding technique and can perform jobs with great accuracy, following a blueprint or indications from the engineer. The formal education required to be a welder is just high-school or less, but the practical apprenticeship goes from a few months to a few years, depending on the setting: vocational school, community college, military or as a job got through an union contract.

If you are working with steel the GMAW or MIG technique is simpler, but you need to know how to use a consumable electrode which needs replacement.
A good pipe welder should be able to perform other types of more specialized jobs, including plasma welding which is more automated, but requires specific training.
Tools of the trade
A pipe welder can work with welding torches, with different nozzle sizes and different types of tungsten electrodes. You are required to know how to assemble a GTAW/GMAW system complete with mounting the inert gas, the external power supply and replacing the electrodes when necessary. Safety procedures include wearing welding mask, gloves and other protective equipment.
Problem solving skills
During the normal operations required by the job, a pipe welder encounters different problems, including weird alloys that react differently than expected, harsh weather conditions, working in non-standard positions or working in tight places, that don’t always meet the standards of proper ventilation or distance from inflammable materials.
