A coder is a short name for a computer programmer, a professional responsible for writing code in a certain programming language. Not to be confused with a “medical coder”, which is administrative function. The role of the coders is to use their expertise in order to create pieces of code that solve a given problem. Programming languages
A coder’s job revolves around the ability to create relevant code using certain tools. Although the basic principles are the same, the syntax of each language is different and the items created are suitable for different purposes. List the languages you have used so far, your skill lever for each and include an example of portfolio items that could be considered representative. The most common are C, C++, C#, Python, Java, JavaScript, Ruby on Rails and IOS. For web developers the skills in demand are PHP and SQL. If you are proficient in less known languages like Haskell, Perl or Lisp, list those as well.
Soft skills
Coding is a team job, where you work alongside other coders, but also QA testers, system architects and more. Highlight your ability to discuss problems, accept other points of view, split work and generally create a collaborative and friendly workplace. You are required to be assertive without becoming aggressive in your opinions and you should be able to motivate your affirmations in a logical manner. Give examples of the methodologies you are able to work in, such as Agile or Waterfall.
Creating documentation
A great coder creates not only code that works, but also the documentation behind it that can be useful to train users or to be consulted by other people who are entrusted to update the project, even after a few years. Sometimes good documentation can even help the coders remember what they intended to do with a certain piece of code or an innovative solution they found and can be used elsewhere.
