The retail banker is a title designating a wide range of bank jobs, including tellers, loan officers or general customer representatives who are more focused on selling banking products than doing general maintenance operations. This means that this role is best suited for candidates with selling abilities, who are excellent communicators and are able to meet targets and quotas.

The retail banker should be a fast learner and have good presentation skills, be a great team player, able to relate to the other professionals in the bank and with clients. As retail bankers focus on attracting new clients and creating high volumes of transactions, it follows that you need to demonstrate solid selling skills, sustained by a deep knowledge of what you are selling. Most of the times you will find yourself in the position to cross sell additional products, as it is known that an existing client is much more receptive than a completely new one. If you have previous experience, give examples of how you achieved your sales targets and if you are just starting in this area try to relate to other client centric jobs you had.

Money handling skills

Since retail bankers work directly with clients over the counter, they are usually in charge of handling money for payments, deposits, currency exchange and other operations. This is an important responsibility and should be treated with carefulness to avoid penalties. Give examples of the amounts you had in the drawer in an average day. Even if you come from a different industry, but had in your administration money or goods it is a strong point to put in the resume.

Team worker or team leader

Most retail bankers work in teams and are under the supervision of a lead officer, usually somebody who was in the same position a few years before and has risen through hard work. As this job requires excellent relational abilities, you should create good connections not only to clients, but to coworkers. Learn about their skills and abilities and ask for help or provide your expertise if a colleague requires you to do so. Referring a client to a more knowledgeable co-worker is a way of improving service.
