Tips for Child and Youth Workers Resumes

Emotional support

Most child and youth workers are taking on the role neglected by parents: to offer emotional comfort and support to youngsters. Most children who need the services of such a worker are in distress, come from broken families or have been victims of abuse, either physical, emotional or both and need to regain their trust in people. The job of these social support professionals is not easy, as they have to make the children stay away from depression, suicidal thoughts and substance abuse and teach them how to cope with their problems. Highlight your formal training and practical experience in providing a helping hand.

Pedagogical skills

Some of the child and youth workers need to develop lesson plans for different activities, taking into consideration the age and previous knowledge of the children. You need to have information about how to organize learning in steps so that the process is efficient and how to evaluate the outcomes of the learning. Even for less academic subjects, like personal hygiene or simple cooking and cleaning habits it is a good idea to have a step by step plan. A creative approach is highly advisable and if you have any artistic skills don’t forget to mention those.

Verbal and written communication

This is a job based on human interaction. Verbal communication is paramount in creating a good connection with the youth. The social worker needs to be able to relate, use simple and empathic language and get accepted fast by those they are trying to help. They are also required to have excellent written communication abilities to create reports describing the activity, apply to grants if they are part of NGOs and help other authorities who might be involved, like the police or Child’s Protection.
