The autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or shortly autism is a type of disability that affects all aspects of life for the suffering person. This is inborn, so it begins to manifest during childhood, impairing normal development of the child, including learning abilities, social skills and sometimes has an effect on simple everyday tasks. When they see one of their subjects is displaying behaviors that are characteristic to a younger age group, they should adapt their teaching methods to fit that particular age group, but teach skills needed for the actual age of the child. Visual learning usually is the best, but music or drawing can help too.

Teaching life skills

One of the biggest challenges of autistic children is performing simple life skills like taking baths, brushing their teeth or dressing appropriately for the season or weather. Although these things are usually thought by parents or older siblings, the autism teacher can help the family strategies to make these simple routines stick in the mind of the autistic child. A lot of positive reinforcement and repetition are necessary, but with care and patience, the results are similar to those of normal children.
