Salesperson Resume Samples and Tips

While the term “salesman” often creates a mental image of a mid-20th century man in a grey suit with a briefcase full of wares, as the technology and environment has changed, the term has expanded to encompass a variety of different jobs. Sales remains one of the most critical positions for most employers, because without sales there is no revenue, and with no revenue there is no company.

This means that for companies looking for salespeople, you are going to have to show that you are someone that they can trust with their investment – and their company.

Tips for Salesperson Resumes

The Working Environment

There are three major ways that salespeople reach customers. The most obvious one is working in a brick-and-mortar retail store, but there are also people that cold call customers or sell door-to-door. Each has its own unique demands and skills that prove more effective.

For example, telemarketers benefit more from speaking clearly, but may have to find unique ways to make personal connections. Door-to-door salespeople have an easier time demoing a product, but also need to have the confidence to call on customers when they’re at home. Tailor your skills to the type of opening you’re looking at.

Material Knowledge

Particularly if you sell in a specialty store, over the phone, or while traveling, it’s important be able to speak for whatever or service you’re offering. In the latter two instances, they may not yet know that they need what you’re selling. Thus, showing a first-hand knowledge of the type of product you’re selling on your resume and being able to put it context within the marketplace means less training later.

Sales Goals

Of course, if you already have experience, it’s a great idea to be specific about it. What were you selling? How much of a customer volume was there? What was your average sales? What goals did you set? How often were you able to cross- or upsell? Data and numbers are the best way to land a job as a salesperson, and will have much more of an effect than anything else you can share.

Making the Connection

Great interpersonal skills for salespeople mean the difference between a good commission and one that’s harder to live on. They have to present themselves as the authority on their product, but they also need to be receptive to customers, listening to their concerns. Not every customer will be responsive to the same approaches, so feel free to discuss your methods and what has worked for you.

Becoming a salesperson can be rewarding. It’s challenging work, however, and that means you need a resume that shows your expertise. The following is a sales resume example:

If you need the best questions for your next interview, why not build a new resume with that?

With sales being such a vast field, a sales person resume may be nowhere close to the above example, but hopefully it will give you an idea of the template and style to use.

Additional Salesperson Resume Tips

  • Professional Sales – College courses in marketing or communications can help, but salespeople often start work straight out of high school. If this is your case, open up with a short paragraph describing why you want to work in sales and then follow it up with list of bullet points in which you describe the skills, verb-first, that make you a good fit for the job.
  • The Hard Sell – Every salesperson looks forward to the next shift as an opportunity to do more than in the last one, but the reality is that it’s hard to truly develop your skills if you’ve never been challenged. Talking generally about instances where the sale was tougher can be beneficial in that it presents you as problem solver capable of making adjustments.
  • A Job Specific Resume – Every sales person job is different, which means every resume you turn it should be different. Never use the same resume for each job, as they all have different requirements you need to prove that you reach.
