Are you looking to write an Electrical Engineering Resume but don’t now where to start. We compiled a guide samples, tips and templates to show you everything you will need and more!
Electrical Engineering Professional Summary Tips
The Professional Summary gives a summary of each of the resume’s following sections. It refers to work in two different industries, and includes mention of certain skills and types of experience.
As you write the summary, think about how you would sum up your career if you were meeting another engineer for the first time. What experience do you think would get their attention, and how would you paint an accurate picture for them in a few sentences? The information that answers these questions is the type of information to include in the Professional Summary section.
Electrical Engineering Skills and Abilities
The Skills and Abilities section includes several of the candidate’s hard skills; that is, skills that require specialist knowledge and have taken some time to acquire. Electrical engineering is an incredibly complex and technical field, so listing specific computer programs and procedures in this section is a great way to include a lot of keywords that jump out at the person reading the resume.
Engineering also requires a lot of soft skills such as communication and prioritizing, particularly for supervisory and management roles. It may be useful to briefly mention these qualities under Skills and Abilities, but they are generally better left until the Experience section, where you can communicate them with more context.
Electrical Engineering Experience
Again, detail is a good thing in the Experience section because electrical engineers may have to take on very specific duties in their jobs. The two positions listed in the resume example open with a bullet point that outlines the role’s responsibilities, then continue with more detail down the list.
Are you able to quantify your achievements if you have worked with budgets or strict deadlines in the past? While the candidate in the example resume has not been in charge of a budget, he shows that he can diagnose and fix problems fast. This demonstrates both that the candidate works well under pressure and that he can save the company money, which are very desirable qualities in an engineer.
Any time spent training and supervising others should also be included, as it demonstrates that the candidate is trustworthy and knowledgeable. Listing this experience in the Experience section, where the reader can get a complete picture of the candidate, is much more effective than simply writing ‘good teacher’ under the Skills and Abilities section.
Electrical Engineering Education
All engineers have at least a Bachelor’s degree in their field, but you can make your Education section stand out more by including any courses you took that relate to the position you’re applying for. Extracurricular activities may also be relevant, especially for new graduates. Participation in university clubs and competition entries shows that you have a good range of knowledge, but also that you are passionate about the field.
